Skills Why and How

1.  I Can Swim Underwater

Why:  Breath Control.

How:  Sink a hula hoop underwater water.  Encourage students to swim toward the bottom by adjusting their body position and aiming for the the hoop. You may initially start this skill by holding the hoop just below the surface. and dive slightly below the surface to submerge and swim through the hoop.

2.  I Can Streamline

Why: Buoyancy, Balance and Movement on the Font and Back!

How: Encourage students to swim while maintaining a horizontal body position (face in on front – eyes down, face up on back, eyes up) while kicking. Arms are extended in front of you, pressed against the head and ears with hands clasped together.

4.  I Can Swim Elementary Backstroke!

Why: The Elementary Backstroke is a great way for students to swim further distances without expending a lot of energy and has simple arm and leg Movements!

How: Encourage students to practice the simultaneous movements of the Elementary Backstroke by putting it all together using the arms and legs!

5. I Can Swim With Big Arms and Flutter Kick!

Why: Introducing simple arm and leg Movement individually can help with a better understanding of the stroke.

How: Use drills to practice the kick separately and the arms separately.

6. I Can Swim With Pizza Arms and Frog Legs!

Why: Introducing simple arm and leg Movement individually can help with a better understanding of the stroke.

How: Use drills to practice the kick separately and the arms separately.

7. I Can Jump, Swim and Climb!

Why: This Safety skill prepares students for how to react if they were to fall into the pool.

How: Students feet first jump into the pool roll to the back and swim across (using any arm and leg movements) once they reach their destination have them climb out independently.  You can have two students jump at once or stagger their jumps to speed things up and keep everyone moving!
